About Sophie Barraclough
She has her own personal practice of mindfulness meditation, which she ‘discovered’ in 2010, in an attempt to better cope with the stresses and strains of modern-day life (it’s worked so far!)
Sophie has had a varied career but has always had a strong interest in the outdoors / natural environment and in health & wellbeing, both in her professional and personal life.
She studied Geology and Environmental Sciences at Aberystwyth and Lancaster Universities and spent nearly 18 years working for the Environment Agency in a variety of roles. She studied fitness training & sports therapy in the late 90’s and set up Lifestylematters, where she worked as a Health & Wellbeing Therapist, before having a bit of time out to be a full-time mum to her two young children. In 2010 she decided to proactively move her career in a different direction. She gained a Certificate in Mental Health Studies from the Open University and later qualified as a Meditation & Mindfulness Teacher. She worked for two mental health charities in a number of roles including setting up a peer mentoring scheme, using the outdoors to support mental health, and as a Well-being co-ordinator, before setting up Wise Owl Wellbeing in 2017.
She has two teenage sons and lives with her husband and their border collie, near Holmfirth in West Yorkshire. Sophie spends as much time as she can outside, whether it be working, relaxing in her garden, taking photographs, enjoying camping holidays, or doing some kind of physical activity such as running, biking, hill walking, climbing mountains, wild swimming or skiing. She has a passion (but not much ability) for fell running and can often be found at the back of the field in a fell race or falling in a bog!
